The Macallan was one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then they have built a reputation as one of the world’s leading single malt whiskies. The creation of The Macallan draws on the vital contributing influences of Spain, North America and Scotland - and of their respective natural raw materials, combined with traditional methods and craftsmanship. The Macallan distillery was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. The original name of the area was “Maghellan”, taken from the Gallic word “magh”, meaning fertile ground and “Ellan”, from the Monk St.Fillan - who held a close association with the church that stood in the grounds of The Macallan Estate until 1400. With up to 80% of The Macallan’s final character and flavour determined by cask quality, the oak cask is the most prominent factor in ensuring and delivering the quality and style of their single malt.
The Macallan Art is the Flower – Charles Rennie Mackintosh
50.4% abv
Nose: Rich dried fruits; raisins and fig, polished oak, cherry, orange, almonds and treacle.
Palate: Sweet oak, raisins, vanilla and ginger, apple and a whisp of leaf tea.
Finish: Long, sweet, rich, and full.
The Macallan Art is the Flower has been exclusively matured in European Sherry seasoned oak casks and expertly brought together by The Macallan Whisky Maker drawing on an extensive inventory of quality European oak casks containing notes of raisin and fig, polished oak, cherry blossom, almonds, orange, and treacle.
“As whisky makers for The Macallan we need to be incredibly familiar with the inventory we hold in our warehouses, drawing upon those that have reached their peak maturation and the freedom to work with our entire inventory really adds to the character and complexity. European oak was key as it delivers beautiful oak notes, spices and dried fruit, but crucially delicate notes of fruits that bear their own blossoms, which provided a link with Mackintosh and his inspiration.”
Steven Bremner, Whisky Maker
