At the confluence of the Rhine and the Nahe, lies Bingen am Rhein. This is home to Weingut Riffel. The winery has been organic since 2009 and biodynamic since 2012 is run by husband and wife team Carolin and Erik - the fourth generation to tend to the now 18 hectares of predominantly Riesling and Pinot Noir. As well as making an array of classic Trocken and Kabinett Rieslings, they are also lucky enough to have holdings in the Grand Cru sites of Scharlachberg, Kirchberg, Osterberg and Rosengarten. Here on the quartzite slopes that mark out this special location, the grapes find full maturity, displaying an array of intense tropical and stone fruit flavours, with a wonderfully energetic yet rounded acidity that frame these captivating and mineral- infused wines. Only 100% perfect grapes are used to allow for long aging on their lees. Ferments are with wild yeasts.
Weingut Riffel Binger Kirchberg Riesling Kabinett 2022

“The 2022 Riesling Binger Kirchberg Kabinett smells of wet stone and citrus with a touch of spice and lemony breeziness. The palate has subtle sweetness, referencing juicy passion fruit and ripe Mirabelle plum. The lemony acidity streaks through the wine, making you want another sip, tingling on the palate, adding saltiness and savor. The 2022 is complex, enticing, savory and long, pitching 43.1 g/l of residual sweetness against 9.4 g/l of acidity. Exciting. (Medium)” 2023 – 2040

“From a cooler site on yellow colored quartzite soils, the 2022 Binger Kirchberg Riesling Kabinett opens with a clear, sharp and precise bouquet of crushed rocks and salts as well as bright Riesling fruit. Round, lush and savory on the palate, this is a light but charmingly juicy Kabinett that shouldn’t be wasted when drunk young but cellared for about a decade. Seriously, this Kabinett has huge talents but won’t show its true class earlier. Highly recommended. ” 2031 – 2050

The Kirchberg is a 40% to 45% east-facing slope with a view of the Rhine. As in the Scharlachberg, the vines are rooted in reddish-colored quartzite and enjoy the morning sun, but they are not exposed to extreme midday heat. The winds from the Rhine provide further cooling.
