Although wine was an important industry in the Yarra Valley throughout the 1800s, by the 1920s it had largely halted as farmers favoured the greater returns available from sheep farming. It took the vision of a now legendary plant physiologist and Roseworthy winemaking graduate, Dr Bailey Carrodus, to help re-establish the Yarra Valley as one of Australia’s pre-eminent wine regions. After several years of careful research, in 1969 he purchased land at the foot of the Warramate Hills, and in 1973 produced the first vintages of his now iconic Dry Red Wine No.1 and Dry Red Wine No.2. Dr Carrodus continued to make the wines until his death in 2008, when the winery was purchased by businessmen Ed Peter and Reid Bosward. Both long term fans of Yarra Yering, they continue to honour the founder’s quest for elegance and sophistication, ably supported by winemaker Sarah Crowe, who in 2017 was named Winemaker of the Year by James Halliday.

Yarra Yering Agincourt Cabernet Malbec 2021
13.5% abv
WINEMAKING
Hand harvested, the Cabernet was berry sorted and the Malbec is bunch sorted. The Cabernet was destemmed, berry sorted and then crushed into the half-tonne open fermenters. A small amount of Cabernet (5%) was whole bunch fermented to bring extra lift and perfume to the wine. Malbec was destemmed to the small fermenters and hand plunged twice daily.
Maturation took place in French Bordeaux shaped barrels; only 15% new oak to enhance the juicy fruit palate and immediate enjoyment. Blending immediately before bottling.
TASTING
Perfume is the signature of this wine with lifted violets, bramble and redcurrant fruits. Bright fruit flavours include cranberry, mulberries and blueberries. Fresh nettle presents a leafy lift and clove spices dance with vibrant acidity and the elegant fruit drive. The Malbec brings the energy and crunch to the wine. A wine of wonderful fruit purity.
VINEYARD
Fruit was sourced from the Agincourt block of Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1995 and Malbec planted in 1990. The Agincourt block is one of the more sheltered sites and this Cabernet clone is highly aromatic and lifted.
