Yarra Yering Pinot Noir 2023

13.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

TASTING
Bright crimson in appearance, with a bouquet of violets, ripe black cherry fruits, a little rose petal lift with a faint hint of smoky char. A fleshy and flavoursome cherry fruit palate profile with a pinch aniseed spice that tames the fruit and lends complexity. The silky elegance combined with a fine tannin structure, enhanced by some inclusion of bunches

VINEYARD
The Yarra Yering planting of Pinot Noir contains some of the oldest vines of their type in the Yarra Valley. A mixed planting of four clones was undertaken in 1969, then followed up with replication in 1981 (top of the slope) and 1984 (bottom of the slope).

WINEMAKING
The grapes were hand-picked and chilled overnight. Processing the following day along a fruit sorting table and destemmed gently into the Yarra Yering signature small fermenters. Some whole bunches were used to contribute subtle stalk structure to the fruit profile. Working of the ferment is via gentle hand plunging twice daily. Minimal extraction contributes to the soft fruit palate along with being gently pressed to separate the wine from the skins and seeds.

Although wine was an important industry in the Yarra Valley throughout the 1800s, by the 1920s it had largely halted as farmers favoured the greater returns available from sheep farming. It took the vision of a now legendary plant physiologist and Roseworthy winemaking graduate, Dr Bailey Carrodus, to help re-establish the Yarra Valley as one of Australia’s pre-eminent wine regions. After several years of careful research, in 1969 he purchased land at the foot of the Warramate Hills, and in 1973 produced the first vintages of his now iconic Dry Red Wine No.1 and Dry Red Wine No.2. Dr Carrodus continued to make the wines until his death in 2008, when the winery was purchased by businessmen Ed Peter and Reid Bosward. Both long term fans of Yarra Yering, they continue to honour the founder’s quest for elegance and sophistication, ably supported by winemaker Sarah Crowe, who in 2017 was named Winemaker of the Year by James Halliday.
