Based on the L’Ormarins estate in Franschoek the Anthonij Rupert estate is fast becoming one of the most impressive and innovative wineries in South Africa. Fruit comes from four vineyard properties in Franschoek itself, Elandskloof, Riebeeksrivier and Darling. Johan Rupert has built one of the most driven and talented teams in the industry and the result is a suitable memorial to Johan’s late brother Anthonij. In 1984 Anthonij, having taken over the running of L’Ormarins from his father restored the Manor House (Built in 1811) and the Historic Cellar (dating back to 1799), which were both declared national monuments. In 1989 L’Ormarins won every major local wine competition. While tragically in 2001, Anthonij Rupert passes away. In 2003 Johann Rupert takes over L’Ormarins. In 2005 he builds the Anthonij Rupert Cellar. A state of the art, gravity fed cellar with revolving ceiling and underground barrel cellar completed in memory of his brother. That same year he employs internationally acclaimed oenologist, Michel Rolland, as a consultant to the Anthonij Rupert team, resulting in the first vintage of Anthonij Rupert wines released in 2009. Since the maiden 2005 vintage completed in this cellar, all wines in the range including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and ‘The Blend’ have consistently scored 90 points and more for every vintage judged by Wine Spectator.
Anthonij Rupert Cape of Good Hope Van Lill & Visser Chenin Blanc 2023
13.5% abv
Vibrant nose of nectarine, stone fruit and melon with a vague hint of flint. There’s more of the same on the palate which is taut but showing lively, fresh arpicot, peach and melon flavours. The acidity makes for a juicy mouthful. Lovely palate weight and texture. Good grip and a long, satisfying aftertaste.
“The Anthonij Rupert Wines 2023 Riebeeksrivier Cape of Good Hope Chenin Blanc comes from a ward that overlooks the Swartland with a warm, dry climate at 350 to 400 meters in elevation and west-facing slopes. The vines were planted in 1988 on decomposed shale and well-draining schist soils. This results in compact bunches and beautiful flavor concentration with dried peach and apricot. Winemaking sees a combination of stainless steel and 500-liter barrel with 9% new oak. The wine spends seven months on the lees, and 10% partial malolactic fermentation was allowed. The lees are kept in suspension with regular bâtonnage. The wine has a second layer that comes across with vanilla and pastry cream. Two cement eggs were delivered last year, and those will be incorporated into the winemaking of this bottle starting in 2025.” 2024 – 2029
92 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate, June 2025
Fermentation occurred spontaneously in both stainless steel (60%) and 300l French Oak barrels (11% new), with 40% of the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation. The wine spent 12 months on the lees before being blended and bottled. Basie van Lill of Arbeidsend has owned and worked these vineyards in the Citrusdal Mountains in Olifants River for decades. The vineyards share space with fynbos and Rooibos tea bushes while sheep also graze the land. These treasured old bush vines, planted without irrigation in 1983 on the well-drained sandy red soils of the Skurfberg Mountain, together with the area’s height above sea level and naturally low rainfall, produce small quantities of intense and balanced wines with a high natural acidity.
