The small family owned estate of 60ha is located in Rioja Alavesa, in Torremontalbo; a tiny village of no more than 20 inhabitants! Bodegas Amézola de la Mora has been aptly run by sisters Cristina and María Amézola following on the tragic death of their respected winemaker father Inigo in 1999. At the time the sisters took on the reigns of the winery they were the youngest wine-producers of the Rioja region. Yet, their young age did not deter them from their goal of pursuing their father’s ambitions. Their enthusiasm and high diligence to producing wines of the highest quality have since earned them an enviable place in Rioja.
The vineyards are located in the viciniity of the Najerilla ; a tributary of the river Ebro with the Cantabria range at the back providing shelter from the cold winds that come in from the Basque Country. This prime location offers optimum ripening opportunities for the Tempranillo grape which accounts for over 85% of the estate plantings.
The winery perfectly combines the qualities associated with tradition and innovation. On one hand, Amezola (whose winery dates back the mid-19th century with old underground cellars) produces traditional Rioja wines which sing of more classic, old school winemaking following the crianza, reserva and gran reserva ageing regimens.
