Bruichladdich was built by Barnett Harvey in 1881. The distillery sits across the road from the North Atlantic Ocean, on the blustery island of Islay. Bruichladdich was given new life by Mark Reynier and Jim McEwan in 2001 and has been under the ownership of Remy Cointreau since 2012. Three different styles of whisky are created at Bruichladdich with three different names representing varying degrees of peat; Bruichladdich: Always unpeated, light, floral and fruity. Port Charlotte: Heavily Peated and elegant, retains the finesse of Bruichladdich but with a backbone of peat. Octomore: the worlds most heavily peated whisky ranging from 107ppm (phenolic parts per million) to above 300ppm. The Botanist Gin is also distilled at Bruichladdich with the 22 botanicals used in distillation foraged from the island.

Much is made about the several thousand botanicals in this gin (slight exageration) but we like it just because its brilliant and is a wonderful Scottish product – well done Bruichladdich. With a total of 31 botanicals, 22 native to the island and 9 others, this is a gin like no other. Its floral aromatics and rich texture are heavily influenced (unexpectedly so) by being distilled in the one and only Lomond still, Ugly Betty. This experimental still, specially adapted for the purpose, runs at an extraordinarily low pressure; it just simmers, taking three times as long to distill this gin as it takes for the whisky resulting in a highly distinctive, complex, floral gin with outstanding finish and impeccable provenance.
