Claude Riffault Sancerre Monoparcelle 469 2021
The Winemaker
Stéphane Riffault manages 33 different parcels of vines in eight lieu-dits, spread across four villages in the Loire Valley. Combining to a total of 13.5 hectares, the estate has been certified organic by ECOCERT and fully biodynamic by BIODYVIN since 2017. In their relentless drive for perfection in harmony with the stunning natural surroundings, the entire harvest is completed by hand and Stéphane puts his good wife to work managing the team, whilst he himself focuses on rigorous sorting and gentle pressing

Having joined the family business in 2001 and been handed the keys to the estate in 2015, Stéphane Riffault has implemented changes that have refined its wines to be some of tyhe most compelling from the region. Starting with the move to hand harvesting in 2008. In 2013, the family moved its 15 hectares to organics, achieving certification in 2016. This led to biodynamic conversion starting in 2018, and 2020 was the first fully biodynamic harvest. All the white wines (it does have 2ha of Pinot Noir) are fermented and aged in large wood. Malolactic fermentation is always avoided, and even its largest production wine, Les Boucauds, spends 10 months on lees. Time on lees rises to 14 months for the single vineyard Les Chasseignes, Les Denisottes and Les Chailloux, creating richly textured, lightly autolytic expressions. Every single cuvée, from its ‘entry-level’ Sancerre Blanc upwards exhibits his texural, seductive style. These are not generic Sancerres' yet the ideal is not to work in new ways for their own sake. Stephane uses the best technique, knowledge and process the world of fine wine can offer to take the wines of the region to their best expression and trusts in where that may lead. Stéphane's brother Benoit is winemaker at the Domaine Étienne Sauzet in Puligny-Montrachet, and they might have an intense exchange about viticultural and winemaking techniques
