Clonakilla ‘Hilltops’ Shiraz 2022

14% abv

Vol- 75cl

This vibrant Shiraz is produced from four different vineyards in the Hilltops district around Young in New South Wales. The altitude is marginally lower than Canberra, so the grapes tend to be harvested around two weeks before those grown on the Murrumbateman estate. Soils are deep red loam over light clay enabling a distinctive blackberry and blackcurrant notes to the wine. 2021 saw a cool summer with regular rainfall which slowed the ripening while retaining cool climate elegance and freshness. The grapes were destemmed and fermented in warm open-top fermenters. 2021 Hilltops Shiraz was aged in mixture of new and old French barriques and puncheons.

“Vibrant and deep ruby red, purple tints to the lip. Raspberry, blueberry, musk stick and violet aromatics. Dark berries fill the front palate; as they evolve across the tongue a layer of dark spices appears and underneath, we see hints of blood and stone. Tannins are a firm, guiding hand to drive the medium weighted palate long and lingering. Has many years ahead of it.”
93 points – Stuart Knox, The Real Review, June 2022

“Medium-bodied, spice and hazelnuts, mint, blueberry and fresh blackberry, a juicy sort of acidity and a firm crunch to tannin, kind of a wheatgerm flavour and texture too, and a bright and meaty peppery finish of good length. Not the most concentrated, but freshness is appealing.”
92 points – Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, March 2022

“Mid crimson. High toned. Transparent. Lightweight. The sort of wine you thought Australian would never produce! Positively racy…”
16.5/20 points – Jancis Robinson MW2, Jancis Robinson, March 202

When John Kirk planted the first vines in 1971 he had no idea that his vineyard would one day be celebrated as one of the best in the country. Along the way there have been trials and tribulations as well as moments of unprecedented success.

Over time something important has become clear: Murrumbateman and Shiraz are one of those rare combinations in the world of wine that can produce something truly exciting.

In 1971 John bought a 44-acre farm near the village of Murrumbateman, 40 kilometres north of Canberra.

A profile of the soil shows the special reddish parna that may be the deposit of inland soils blown in many thousands of years ago. This permeable layer rests over yellowish clays under which lies a heavier bed of clay consisting of broken down, decomposed dacite of volcanic origin.

On this soil, John planted a vineyard and named the property Clonakilla - ‘meadow of the church’ - after his grandfather’s farm in County Clare.
