Esk Valley Rose 2022

12.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes (with a little toucvh of malbec) were crushed to our open topped fermenters and left to soak on skins for 24 to 36 hours to extract colour from the skins. When sufficient colour had been extracted, juice was pumped from the fermenters, inoculated using a special yeast strain and fermented at low temperatures. The ferment was stopped leaving a small amount of residual sugar and then bottled as quickly as possible to retain freshness.

This dry style Rosé is widely regarded as New Zealand’s premium Rosé, having won many awards over the years since its first vintage in 1991. It is excellent with most foods or as an apéritif. Aromas of strawberries and red fruits predominate while a hint of spice adds complexity. The wine is full flavoured, elegant and delicious.

Esk Valley Estate was first established by Englishman Robert Bird in 1933 under the name Glenvale. Bird constructed the winery and cellars and focussed on producing fortified wine styles that were popular at the time. Glenvale grew quickly and at its peak was the 5th largest winery in New Zealand.

Sir George Fistonich owner of Villa Maria purchased and renamed the estate in 1986 with a focus on high quality wines from local Hawkes Bay vineyards. In 1988 a program to re-establish an abandoned terraced vineyard was undertaken. This vineyard on the north facing valley wall of the old winery site was planted in 1989 and the resulting wine, The Terraces, has become one of New Zealand’s most highly sought-after wines.

Their long-standing winemaker, Gordon Russell, was appointed in 1993 and has dedicated the last 25 years to developing their reputation as a boutique winery, renowned for hand-crafted premium reds and elegant whites.
