Fabio Motta's story is a winemaker’s dream fulfilled. After years of working alongside renowned Bolgheri producer—and now father-in-law—Michele Satta, Fabio founded his own estate in 2009, acquiring 4 hectares of vines first planted in 1997. Nestled in the heart of the Bolgheri DOC, his vineyards enjoy a prime position: sun-drenched slopes with a southwesterly exposure, perched between the rolling Tuscan hills and the shimmering Tyrrhenian Sea. From the beginning, Fabio's wines have expressed the soul of Bolgheri — its elegance, its structure, and its natural beauty. His approach in the cellar is one of minimal intervention, relying on native yeasts, no filtration, and a deep respect for the individuality of each vintage. The result is a range of wines defined not by force, but by finesse, balance, and layered complexity. In 2015, Fabio began converting his vineyards to biodynamic farming.
Fabio Motta Le Gonnare Bolgheri Rosso Superiore 2020
13.5% abv
A toned and mineral blend of racy Merlot & Cabernet. Dark fruits and granite alongside sculpted aromas of mediterranean flowers and herbs.
“The Fabio Motta 2020 Bolgheri Superiore Le Gonnare is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine holds back just a hair in terms of structure and mouthfeel, and the bouquet is colored with black fruits, sweet cedar, spice and a touch of grilled rosemary. It shows initial restraint and needs more bottle time. This is rich on the palate, with some sanguine or rusty notes that add a touch of saltiness to the finish. Winemaking starts off in cement vats and ages in barrique (with just 25% new oak).” 2024 – 2033

The grapes are harvested in small baskets, they come entirely destemmed and pressed. Ferment as always with natural yeasts in tanks of non-vitrified cement, paying particular attention to maceration times. After the natural malolactic fermentation it goes into barriques of which 25% are new, preferring light toasted. Here it ages for 18 months and after the appropriate filtrations it is ready at bottling. Remains in the bottle for at least 1 year.
Purchased in 2012 this small vineyard has soil is rich in clay and stones that allows a gradual ripening. This is rare and significant, especially for Merlot grapes. The character of the wine is mediterranean but very balanced.
