Often rightly considered the finest producers of Central Otago Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this low intervention, gravity fed, organic and biodynamic winery is all about hands-off purity, quality and class. Felton Road dates back to 1991, with the planting of the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road, in the Bannockburn district of Central Otago. However lauded the Chardonnays and Rieslings may be, the international profile of Felton Road is justly upheld by the series of vineyard specific Pinot Noirs which express the nuances and character of each individual site. Vineyard notes: "Since 2002 the vineyards have been managed organically and biodynamically. In 2010 all four vineyards were awarded full Demeter certification and in 2020 they were all also certified by BioGro. Pruning is carried out to leave desired bud numbers thus ensuring moderate controllable yields and to create an even, light penetrable canopy. Irrigation is usually necessary during the later dry summer months. Soil moisture levels are carefully monitored and water is applied only when necessary to maintain appropriate soil moisture levels. All grapes are carefully hand picked, keeping separate any quality differences within blocks due to clones, rootstocks and viticultural trials."

Felton Road Calvert Pinot Noir 2024
13.5% abv
Perfumed floral notes abound amongst a background of dark fruits, Indian spice and a savoury earthiness. The vines, now 20 years old, are deeply settled in the silt soils of this remarkable site – providing a distinctive and consistent vineyard expression. Florality, subtlety and harmony, with finely chiseled tannins, are the hallmarks of Calvert.
The unique gravity flow winery enabled the grapes to be gently destemmed directly into open-top fermenters without harsh pumping with approximately 20% retained as whole clusters. Long pre-fermentation soaks of 8-10 days prior to fermentation with indigenous yeasts and punched down by hand up to two times per day with a total time on skins of 22-24 days. Pressed off and barrels filled immediately by gravity to the underground barrel cellars. The wine spent 16 months in barrel (25% new French) with two rackings and no fining or filtration.
