Often rightly considered the finest producers of Central Otago Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, this low intervention, gravity fed, organic and biodynamic winery is all about hands-off purity, quality and class. Felton Road dates back to 1991, with the planting of the Elms Vineyard on Felton Road, in the Bannockburn district of Central Otago. However lauded the Chardonnays and Rieslings may be, the international profile of Felton Road is justly upheld by the series of vineyard specific Pinot Noirs which express the nuances and character of each individual site. Vineyard notes: "Since 2002 the vineyards have been managed organically and biodynamically. In 2010 all four vineyards were awarded full Demeter certification and in 2020 they were all also certified by BioGro. Pruning is carried out to leave desired bud numbers thus ensuring moderate controllable yields and to create an even, light penetrable canopy. Irrigation is usually necessary during the later dry summer months. Soil moisture levels are carefully monitored and water is applied only when necessary to maintain appropriate soil moisture levels. All grapes are carefully hand picked, keeping separate any quality differences within blocks due to clones, rootstocks and viticultural trials."
Felton Road Cornish Point Pinot Noir 2024
14% abv
“The 2024 Cornish Point Pinot Noir is succulent and concentrated, with abundantly dark fruit, sappy tannins and baking spices. There are notes of star anise and sweet licorice, tapenade and mulberry, with dark chocolate to close. The fruit in the Felton Road Pinots this year feels starkly different in character than previous vintages, and I do not attribute this to any major change in the vineyard but rather an effect of the season. This is very good. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.” 2025 – 2034
94 Points, Erin Larkin, The Wine Advocate, Jan 2026
As we have come to expect, Cornish Point has a slightly reserved nose as a young wine, with hints of dark fruit, raspberry, roses and crushed herbs. The palate is dense, a core of dark raspberry, then dark petals (rose and violets), and a pleasant waft of char. Serious texture and harmony, opulent yet refined. This is a brooding and powerful rendition from an outstanding vintage.
The unique gravity flow winery enabled the grapes to be gently destemmed directly into open-top fermenters without pumping, with 23% retained as whole clusters. Traditional fermentation with a moderately long maceration on skins has extracted good colour and tannin with considerable depth of flavour. This wine was aged for 13 months in 30% new French oak barrels from artisan Burgundian coopers. In accordance with their non-interventionalist approach to winemaking, this wine was fermented with indigenous yeast and was not fined or filtered
