Pol Roger made his first sale of wine in January 1849. Family circumstances forced him to set up a business his father, a notary, had contracted an incurable disease and could no longer carry on his practice. The customer was a merchant in Aÿ, the native village of Pol Roger. The firm developed rapidly. From Aÿ, it moved to Epernay in 1851. As early as 1855, Pol began to favor production of brut Champagne. He knew that this was the type of Champagne which the English preferred. By 1899, when its founder died, the brand had acquired an enviable amount of recognition. It had only taken about thirty years. Today, Pol Roger remains a family-owned house holding around 89 hectares of its own vineyards as well as buying in grapes from trusted growers. It is well known for its white-foiled Brut Reserve and of course Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill, named after the man himself, known for enjoying Pol Roger every day!
Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs 2015
13% abv
Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs is exclusively made from Chardonnays selected from the Grands Crus of the Côte des Blancs ; Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize and Oger. Produced in limited quantities, this Cuvée has been aged for 9 years in the Pol Roger cellars before being released onto the market.
The cellars run for 7km and are on three levels, the deepest known as the ‘cave de prise de mousse’ at 34m below street level. As the name suggests this is where the wine undergoes its secondary fermentation in bottle. The fact that this deep cellar is at 9°C or less, rather than a normal cellar temperature of 11-12°C, prolongs this fermentation and contributes to the quality and particular style of the wines and their famously fine bubbles.
The Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs 2004 is a pure delight of a Champagne; to be savoured either as an aperitif or enjoyed as an excellent match for fine food.
