Pol Roger made his first sale of wine in January 1849. Family circumstances forced him to set up a business his father, a notary, had contracted an incurable disease and could no longer carry on his practice. The customer was a merchant in Aÿ, the native village of Pol Roger. The firm developed rapidly. From Aÿ, it moved to Epernay in 1851. As early as 1855, Pol began to favor production of brut Champagne. He knew that this was the type of Champagne which the English preferred. By 1899, when its founder died, the brand had acquired an enviable amount of recognition. It had only taken about thirty years. Today, Pol Roger remains a family-owned house holding around 89 hectares of its own vineyards as well as buying in grapes from trusted growers. It is well known for its white-foiled Brut Reserve and of course Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill, named after the man himself, known for enjoying Pol Roger every day!

Since its 175th anniversary, Pol Roger has decided to offer a very limited range of older vintages from its iconic cuvées. After the original disgorgement, these bottles were then returned to the famously deep and cool Pol Roger cellars for additional extended maturation where they have rested undisturbed until their release. Not only do these bottles have a label, cap and collar based on a historic Pol Roger design, they also have been dressed by hand and arrive in an elegant wooden box
Brut Vintage Vinotheque 2002 is a champagne made from the House’s traditional blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from 20 Grands Crus and Premiers Crus in the Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs regions. Produced in limited quantities, the cuvée matured for 10 years in cellars prior to disgorgement. All the Vinotheque bottles went through hand riddling (remuage) in the traditional way before disgorgement and dosage.
