Soul Growers was formed in 1998 by the experienced winemaker Paul Heinicke with the addition of award-winning winemaker Stuart Bourne, and quickly gathered a strong following in their domestic, Asian and North American markets. Most of their dedicated team members are 5th generation descendants from the first grape-growing families who settled in the Barossa valley. They are fortunate to work with Old Vine, Survivor, Centurion and Ancestor vines, some being over 130 years old, and their goal is to let the unique character of these vineyard sites across the Barossa valley shine through in their wines. Where nature provides, they only guide. With this in mind, they strive to make sure Soul Growers wines emphasise the regional and varietal flavours of their beloved Barossa Valley. The essence of what they strive for is to ensure a lifestyle that is good for the Soul; wine, food, family, music, mates and fun.
Soul Growers Equilibrium GSM 2023
14.5% abv
A blend of grenache (41%), shiraz (39%) and mataro (20%) sourced from five vineyards from the subregions of Stonewell, Marananga, Greenock and Vine Vale. Notes of ripe plum, mulberry and dark cherry fruits with a swell of spice and hints of licorice, cola, wood spice, pressed flowers and dried meats. Powdery tannins with a nice flow of spiced plummy fruits on the palate and a medium-length finish.
90 Points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion
Light plum with lifted perfumed characters of plum, cassis and red berries and a touch of spice and earthiness. Soft and smooth on the palate with berry characters intermingled with dark spice and an earthy complexity.
WINEMAKING
Whole berry, open fermented for seven days. Soft pressed and matured in seasoned French Hogsheads and Puncheons for 11 months. Blended to taste to enhance lift, structure, spice and balance.
VINTAGE REPORT A cool, wet spring followed by a mild summer led to a delayed start to the Barossa vintage, with harvest beginning two to three weeks later than average. Consistent winter and spring rains replenished moisture levels but slowed vine development. The long, slow ripening period under ideal conditions allowed grapes to develop excellent colour, flavour, and natural acidity. Yields are slightly above average, and overall fruit quality is outstanding. The extended ripening has produced wines with depth, vibrancy, and strong regional character.
