Fabio Motta, Bolgheri, Tuscany

This is the story of one man’s dream come true, Fabio Motta, who founded the winery in 2009 with the acquisition of 4 hectares of vines planted in 1997 within the Bolgheri DOC. The position is excellent: overlooking the sea, at the feet of the characteristic rolling hills of Bolgheri, with southwestern exposure. No newcomer to Bolgheri, Fabio has worked for many years with esteemed Bolgheri producer Michele Satta, who is also his father-in-law. Fabio’s wines respect and reflect the characteristic traits of the Bolgheri terroir, interpreted within the unique frame of each vintage. In the cellar, Fabio works in a simple way, following his philosophy of “non-interference,” using natural yeasts and no filtering, crafting wines which excel in elegance and complexity rather than power and concentration.

Fabio’s white wine is the Bolgheri Bianco ‘Nova’ a blend of Vermentino, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc fermented and aged on lees in stainless steel. From a coastal vineyard the Bolgheri Rosso ‘Pievi’ is 50% Merlot with 25% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Aging is in used barriques for 12 months. A selection of Sangiovese from the vineyard comprises the Scudiere with partial whole bunch ferment and aging in used barrique. The lauded Bolgheri Rosso Superiore ‘Gonnare’ is a single vineyard blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Syrah that spends 18 months in barrique, one third new. “Fabio Motta presents a very impressive set of new releases. These fantastic wines will cement the reputation of this young and up-and-coming winemaker from Bolgheri, and will lift his profile. Fabio Motta is crafting his own biodynamic wine-making signature that shows both elegance and power.” Wine Advocate October 2016 Wine Region
