Marjan Simcic Pinot Noir Cru Selection 2021

13.5% abv

Vol- 75cl

“A bright translucent red wine in a genuine Pinot Noir hue. The bouquet shows attractive purity of red fruit with a touch of tobacco leaf, well-integrated vanilla and a hint of black tea. To taste, there is plenty of juicy, wild strawberry fruit, supported by elegant acidity and fine-grained tannins. A youthful and very precise, pure expression of Pinot Noir that will repay a little patience.”
Caroline Gilby MW

“A smoky blend of wild strawberries, wilted violets and cedary spice introduces the 2021 Pinot Noir Breg Cru. Round and soothing, this possesses juicy acidity and brilliant wild berry fruits lifted by stimulating acidity. Rosy inner florals form toward the close. It tapers off tense and gently tannic, leaving a spicy sensation and hints of licorice to linger. Well done.” 2025 – 2029
92 Points, Eric Guido, Vinous, Dec 2023

Transparent, ruby red colour, approaching a brick-like hue. The bouquet is of cherry liqueur, classy oak and orange peel. A core of ripe fruit, especially cherries. The palate is fresh with pleasing tart energy. Fruit and savoury elements are all in elegant harmony. You are left with a delightfully long aftertaste of cherries, herbs and sandalwood.

Fermented in contact with skins of berries for 14 days in 5,000 Litre stainless steel tanks with wild yeasts. Aged 12 months in 3.2hl French COnical Oak and then 12 months in 225l French barrique. Fruit comes from the Medana Jama cru in Slovenia from approx 25year old vines.

Marjan Simcic

The Slovenian region of Brda lies immediately to the east of Italy’s Collio region. The two denominations, in reality, comprise one contiguous quality wine zone whose terroir is rudely bisected by an international border. Today many winemakers and grapes cross the border in both directions in short journeys from vineyard to cellar. The Simcic family trace their wine making story in the region back to 1860. Their aim is to respect the historic traditions of the region in both viticulture and wine-making. The 24 Hectare estate's vineyards are farmed organically, yields are kept low and only natural yeasts are used. Marjan is one of the best winemakers in Europe and has honed his knowledge of his land all his life and works to progress the quality of the wines tirelessly every year. The wines are divided into three distinct ranges. Classic ( younger vines, all stainless steel, short maceration with lees aging). Cru Selection (single vineyard, oak ferment and aging, some skin contact). Opoka ( the oldest vines of the Crus, planted on the prized Opoka Soil, longer aging)
