Marjan Simcic Ribolla Opoka 2021

13% abv

Vol- 75cl

“This is a glorious, complex wine that brings two worlds together – tradition and modernity. 67-year-old vines at 200 to 250 m on the region’s special opoka soil provided the fantastic, concentrated grapes for this wine. It was fermented for 16 days with skins in concrete eggs (made with stones from the vineyard), and has amazing aromatic expression of orange blossom, spice, wild herbs, and peach fruit. The palate is intense and sapid, very pure and bright, with ripe peach notes, orange zest and a touch of spice, underscored by a mineral core and superfine tannins. A wine with a long life ahead of it too.”
Caroline Gilby MW

Deep yellow colour, with mineral fragrances. Clear, although only decanted and not filtered before bottling. The nose of the wine displays its nobility. Pleasant note. Fresh, well-balanced between alcohol and acids, announcing longevity. Persistent and very complex taste, tending to mature grape.

The Ribolla Gialla Opoka comes from an acute selection from the estate’s oldest vines, Around 70years old, in the Medana Jama cru in Brda. Fermentation is in 1,000 litre concrete eggs with 16 days maceration on skins. Aging is 10 months in 1,000 Litre concrete eggs and 12 months in 500 Litre oak barrels (tono). Seriously complex and fresh with apple skin, bitter almond and mineral in abundance and a long life of improving yet to come. The Opoka wines are the most gloriously textured of all Marjan’s wines.

The Slovenian region of Brda lies immediately to the east of Italy’s Collio region. The two denominations, in reality, comprise one contiguous quality wine zone whose terroir is rudely bisected by an international border. Today many winemakers and grapes cross the border in both directions in short journeys from vineyard to cellar. The Simcic family trace their wine making story in the region back to 1860. Their aim is to respect the historic traditions of the region in both viticulture and wine-making. The 24 Hectare estate's vineyards are farmed organically, yields are kept low and only natural yeasts are used. Marjan is one of the best winemakers in Europe and has honed his knowledge of his land all his life and works to progress the quality of the wines tirelessly every year. The wines are divided into three distinct ranges. Classic ( younger vines, all stainless steel, short maceration with lees aging). Cru Selection (single vineyard, oak ferment and aging, some skin contact). Opoka ( the oldest vines of the Crus, planted on the prized Opoka Soil, longer aging)
