Pol Roger made his first sale of wine in January 1849. Family circumstances forced him to set up a business his father, a notary, had contracted an incurable disease and could no longer carry on his practice. The customer was a merchant in Aÿ, the native village of Pol Roger. The firm developed rapidly. From Aÿ, it moved to Epernay in 1851. As early as 1855, Pol began to favor production of brut Champagne. He knew that this was the type of Champagne which the English preferred. By 1899, when its founder died, the brand had acquired an enviable amount of recognition. It had only taken about thirty years. Today, Pol Roger remains a family-owned house holding around 89 hectares of its own vineyards as well as buying in grapes from trusted growers. It is well known for its white-foiled Brut Reserve and of course Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill, named after the man himself, known for enjoying Pol Roger every day!

Pol Roger Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill 2018
12.5% abv
2018 was a warm and generous growing season characterised by abundant sunshine, excellent flowering and optimal condition for ripening, yielding an exceptional harvest. 2018 is considered one of the most promising vintages of the past two decades, offering balance, freshness and depth. This is the first vintage made under the stewardship of Damien Cambres, Winemaker at Champagne Pol Roger, who took the reins following the retirement of long-time Chef de Cave, Dominique Petit.
“The 2018 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is an elegant, polished wine very much in the gracious, lighter style of the year. Subtle citrus inflections, white peach, flowers, mint and white pepper are all beautifully delineated in the glass. Clean mineral notes infuse the vibrant finish. This is an especially airy Churchill, a Champagne built more on finesse and persistence than size.” 96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“Deeper-flavoured than the 2018 regular vintage wine. As rich but with more marked acidity. Very vibrant with more energy than many 2018 champagnes. But, unlike some 7-year-old versions of this wine, it’s already delightfully approachable. Very long.” 18 points, Jancis Robinson, Purple Pages
