Pol Roger made his first sale of wine in January 1849. Family circumstances forced him to set up a business his father, a notary, had contracted an incurable disease and could no longer carry on his practice. The customer was a merchant in Aÿ, the native village of Pol Roger. The firm developed rapidly. From Aÿ, it moved to Epernay in 1851. As early as 1855, Pol began to favor production of brut Champagne. He knew that this was the type of Champagne which the English preferred. By 1899, when its founder died, the brand had acquired an enviable amount of recognition. It had only taken about thirty years. Today, Pol Roger remains a family-owned house holding around 89 hectares of its own vineyards as well as buying in grapes from trusted growers. It is well known for its white-foiled Brut Reserve and of course Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill, named after the man himself, known for enjoying Pol Roger every day!
Pol Roger Vintage 2018
12.5% abv
Throughout Pol Roger’s long history, many aspects of the company have changed, however, the House has always held to its core values: family, independence, and an uncompromising attitude to excellence.
Since 1849, Pol Roger has committed itself to releasing a vintage-dated Champagne only when the climatic conditions permit the production of grapes of outstanding ripeness and wines with a capacity to age. Complex and rich, the Brut Vintage 2018 is such a wine.
Pol Roger Brut Vintage 2018 benefitted from wonderful summer conditions of long, warm sunshine-filled days, leading to an early harvest on 20th August. The harvest yielded a plentiful crop (much like in 1928) in immaculate condition, with just over 10% potential alcohol and abundant aromatic levels. Whilst acidity levels are lower than those in 2008, the wine gives a wonderful impression of tautness and freshness to underpin the undoubted power of the vintage. The dosage has been reduced further to 7g/L in order to show off the expressive aromatics and to further balance the weight on the palate.
The House remains dedicated to vintage wines that will stand the test of time, and we are quite sure the Brut Vintage 2018 is a wine that could be enjoyed at Pol Roger’s 200th Anniversary in 2049.
