The Falanis project was created by the founders of Bodega Ànima Negra and is rooted with one foot on the home island of Mallorca and the other foot in the regions of Montsant, Penedès & Calatayud where wines are produced from old vineyards of those regions native varieties. Terra de Falanis was the name used by the Mallorcan historian, author and artist Miquel Barceló to describe the village and people before the existance of the actual village Felanitx, one of the most important villages on the east coast of Mallorca, and home to Anima Negra. AN see the Falanis project as a way of extending the concepts and techniques that they have learnt, in other regions away from Mallorca, applying them further afield from their natural borders, discovering the fantastic possibilities in other denominations of origin.
Terra de Falanis GTX Pirate Wine 2020
14% abv
Untamed Garnacha – wild black fruits, round and enveloping with great mineral length and juicy soul.
No grape variety, no origin, no vintage (on the label)… unregistered vines that are transported from the vineyard to the winery in the Penedès area.
The story began during a conversation between one of the members of the Mallorcan winery Ànima Negra and a winery owning friend in Penedès. In this chat he said that he had some very old vines in the Calatatyud (Aragón) region, at an altitude of between 900 & 1,100 metres, with differing orientations from which he had never made a single wine. The singularity of the countryside, the richness of the soils, the old vine Garnachas (GTX)* co-inhabiting with the aromatic herbs, the extreme gradients that are so difficult to access…. All grant the opportunity to think about crafting something truly unique under the Terra de Falanis umbrella.
Due to the terrain, these vines have never been treated in their lives, apart from some hand sewn sulphur. The ageing is done in a second use 2,000 Litre oak Tino coming from the ÀNIMA NEGRA Winery.
Costs and complications of compiling the cuvee mean it is now discontinued as the price to make economic sense makes the winery sales process more complictaed. These are the last bottles from the final 60 that were bought!
