The Slovenian region of Brda lies immediately to the east of Italy’s Collio region. The two denominations, in reality, comprise one contiguous quality wine zone whose terroir is rudely bisected by an international border. Today many winemakers and grapes cross the border in both directions in short journeys from vineyard to cellar. The Simcic family trace their wine making story in the region back to 1860. Their aim is to respect the historic traditions of the region in both viticulture and wine-making. The 24 Hectare estate's vineyards are farmed organically, yields are kept low and only natural yeasts are used. Marjan is one of the best winemakers in Europe and has honed his knowledge of his land all his life and works to progress the quality of the wines tirelessly every year. The wines are divided into three distinct ranges. Classic ( younger vines, all stainless steel, short maceration with lees aging). Cru Selection (single vineyard, oak ferment and aging, some skin contact). Opoka ( the oldest vines of the Crus, planted on the prized Opoka Soil, longer aging)
Marjan Simcic Chardonnay Opoka 2021
14% abv
“This Chardonnay comes from the highest part of the vineyard, from two different positions and is fermented and aged in conical oak casks. It’s a crystal bright, golden wine with a super inviting nose, expressing lemon flowers, white peach and yellow plum fruit aromas, enhanced by a harmonious creamy back note. There’s lovely fruit intensity, recalling apple, lemon and white blossom, supported by fine, vivid crispness and great purity, then a lingering graceful mineral finish. This is superb, elegant Chardonnay by anyone’s standards – a beautiful wine.”
Caroline Gilby MW
The Chardonnay Opoka is selected from the oldest vines at 54 years. Fermentation occurs in 4,000 litre conical oak with 2 days maceration on the skins. Aging takes place in 3,000 litre Allier conical oak for 23 months followed by a minimum of 4 months in bottle. Mineral laden with swooshes of vanilla and toast over the tropical fruits leading to a saline finish.
